Madonna Claire Kolbenschlag, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 2, 1935 to Maud Matthews Kolbenschlag and William G. Kolbenschlag. She graduated from Lourdes Academy in Cleveland in 1953. She then joined the religious community of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary (H.M.), based in Villa Maria, Pennsylvania, taking her first vows in 1956, and professing her final vows in 1959.
